Who is Golden Poppy Perinatal?

Hi, I’m Katie; a mother of two, and a doula offering family support throughout the perinatal period.

I passionately believe that families, mothers, and babies need more collective support throughout this transformative period, and that with the right balance of education, nurture, and advocacy, new families can thrive.

I’m trained as both a birth and postpartum doula through Sierra Doula Academy and I am working towards DONA Certification, as well as lactation consultant certification through the Center for Breastfeeding. I’m excited to start offering in-person birth and lactation support in 2026! I’m also proud to be a NICU-informed doula, having undergone NICU Doula training with The NICU Translator.

What is a doula?

Doulas provide physiological, emotional, practical, and informational support through the end of pregnancy, during childbirth, and in postpartum. Doulas are not medical providers, but we are a part of your healthcare team. We facilitate communication between you and your healthcare providers, decoding medical terms and norms and helping you express your desires for labor and delivery. We also provide advocacy and help you ensure that your voice is heard. As a doula, I’m able to develop close relationships with families to provide ongoing informed and compassionate care.

I believe the time spent on education, planning, preparing, and recovering is as crucial to a new family’s wellbeing as direct support during childbirth. The name Golden Poppy Perinatal highlights not only my role as your doula, but the foundational importance of the complete perinatal period, or in other words, your path to parenthood. As your perinatal doula, I help guide you into your new life feeling informed and empowered.

What I Believe

  • The perinatal period is a profound portal to a new life—not just the life of your baby, but also your new life as a parent. To be pregnant, to give birth, is to cross a threshold. My goal is to ensure families have the support they need to enter this new life empowered and clear-eyed, needs met, and proverbial cups so full that love and comfort overflow.

Throughout history and in cultures all around the world, new mothers have received ritualistic care to promote rest, healing, bonding, and the integration of their new identity. I’m passionate about promoting a modern-day version of deep care for mothers and families. Our contemporary culture may prize productivity and individualism, but in this sacred window of time, we can silence the societal noise and prioritize the wellbeing of the family above all else.

You deserve support. You deserve nourishment. You deserve nurture, care, and time for rest, introspection, and bonding. I am here to offer you that support and to help you develop a plan to ensure your needs are met and your wellbeing is protected throughout the perinatal period.

  • Pregnancy, childbirth, and newborn babies are full of surprises. The apps that tell us which fruit or vegetable matches the size of our babies week by week excite us, but they can’t prepare us for the many unpredictable circumstances that can arise throughout the perinatal period. And while it’s unrealistic for expecting parents to study every possible outcome, a foundational knowledge of pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, and the newborn, empowers families with the ability to make informed decisions about their care.

In a world flooded with information, it can be challenging for parents to hear through the noise and find clear, evidence-based resources to inform their journey to and through parenthood. As your doula, I will work with you in person to help you expand your understanding of your unique perinatal experience, answer questions, and facilitate an informed plan that acknowledges the potential for various common scenarios in birth and postpartum. I will provide you with clear, evidence-based resources and reference sheets so that you are well-equipped and ready for whatever comes next.

  • Obstetricians and midwives deliver babies every day. While they provide invaluable knowledge and skill, they can sometimes forget that your pregnancy and birth is a unique and meaningful experience for you. While they know all the procedures and protocols, they do not know your values, and they do not know the rich context of your life that determines what is important to you in your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experiences.

Part of my job as your doula is to help you decide and articulate what matters to you and to teach you how to advocate for your goals and desires throughout this process. I love providing evidence and research to help parents formulate their desired outcomes and work with their healthcare providers to achieve them if possible.

This extends to the postpartum period and throughout infancy. Parenthood in the current era is noisy—the world will flood you with advice and recommendations on how to respond to, and sometimes optimize, your baby. But nobody knows your baby like you. By providing you with some basic information about biological norms in infancy, I can help you decide how you want to care for your newborn.

This is your story. This is your experience. Your voice matters.
